Last night was very, very, long for all us, but especially for Lettie. She has a ton of mucus that keeps building up in her throat & chest and she cannot cough it up so it just sits in her throat. We sit her up, hoping that will help but she doesn't have the strength to cough hard enough. Last night it was the worst night she has had with this mucus & it started to cause her difficulty in getting breathes and we got really worried. The respiratory therapist was called in around midnight and he was able to suction through her nose to her lungs. This removed a large bolus of thick mucus. The nurses suctioned as the buildup continued to come back throughout the night. This is painful & causes a lot of irritation & some bleeding. Finally, around 4am she seemed to be more comfortable and was able to rest better. I slept in the crib with her last night since there was so much going on and we were worried about her breathing. When the dr. came in this morning I asked him about her being so sleepy, he just said her labs are fine & we should be concerned not alarmed. He said to remember she had a major surgery and she's just taking longer than expected to adjust to it. Honestly, that's hard to hear as a parent cause you worry so much when things don't seem to go as planned. She is still getting fed through her NG tube but we're hoping to wean off that before we leave Wed. for Atlanta.
As I post this she is still asleep. PT has her up in her chair to help with the swallowing & to hopefully arouse her some. Please continue to pray she will wake more and become more responsive, pray the mucus will subside, & pray she will start to eat & drink from her bottle. Well, Happy 4th to all and hopefully my next post will have more positive news.
